Forest School for ALL – a conference to share practise and look at how we offer this to everyone – no matter what ability, creed or need.

This day will be for Worcestershire and West Midlands Forest School practitioners.

The aims of the day will be to;
• Share practise and principles of Forest school
• Examine inclusion in Forest School
• To provide opportunities to network and look at local support

Professor Tony Booth, from Cambridge University, to start the day off with some thoughts and challenges about how Forest School and education can actually implement an inclusion agenda.

11.00 Workshops around inclusion;

  • Raising expectations and competencies of learners with severe and moderate needs at FS – from mobility needs through to language delay – facilitated by Clair Evans from Chadsgrove Special School
  • Engaging learners with emotional and behavioural needs through FS – facilitated by Richard Liggitt, outdoor ed co-ordinator Wyre Forest School
  • Working across cultures, the challenges and ‘ways and means’ – facilitated by Sam Harman, FS/Play co-ordinator for Sandwell BC and Mel McCree, playworker, researcher and writer
  • How play can facilitate inclusion at FS – facilitated by Lily Horseman of Kindling Play and Training
  • Including TA’s – the challenges and ways and means of influencing FS agenda in schools – facilitated by Helen Fairest, FS leader at Oldbury Park Primary School
  • Working across the school – Forest School for all in primary schools – facilitated by Julie Wills, Headteacher of Upton upon Primary School

1.15 How do we support each other – the Forest School Association. Establishing a local FSA group?

1.45pm Afternoon workshops in the woods

  • Play and ‘flow’ in Forest School – Lily Horseman, Lily will be taking participants on an elemental quest, an adventure to discover some theories about play and the state of flow. As with all good quests there may or may not be dragons…
  • Working with Bushcraft skills at Forest School – Ade Llewellyn, Tracking, wild foods and ……….
  • The Language of Trees – Craig Wood and Matt Hawes, Craig Wood of Birmingham Wildlife Trust and Matt Hawes, Site Manager at Bishops Wood, will take participants on a walk around Bishops Wood’s woodland, looking at tree characteristics, things to look for when identifying trees that may be hazardous and sharing some tree lore and stories.
  • Going feral in the woods – Mel McCree and Sam Harman, How do leaders support and scaffold child centred learning in a creative way – this practical workshop will look at playful techniques for working alongside learners.
  • Going crafty at FS – Caroline Price, This workshop will look at some very practical ‘craft’ techniques and skills that can help learners be both more creative and ‘crafty’. You will go away with a crafty object, Cal will be working in willow, clay, wood and more.
  • Playing with Story – Carol Graham, Carol will take practitioners through some storymaking techniques applicable to FS through the year. This workshop will also include some tips on telling stories at FS.
