Our social network was a bit ‘clunky’, not very intuitive, and comments appearing in the main activity stream could not be seen in their entirety if the comment originated in a forum. I have smoothed it out quite a bit so please do come back and see how it feels now.
For those who care about the detail of what I have done … Having let it run for a while, learned a bit about how it works and how it was being used I have made a few changes that should make it hang together quite a bit better. Firstly, I have got rid of the forum topics. They were rarely used and people preferred making comments in the group RSS feeds or directly into the main activity feed. I have also removed the link to forums from the menu so that people go straight to the activity feed and groups. The RSS feeds allow comments to be made and tracked so that individual threads are easier to follow. This means that someone can post in a group’s RSS feed and that post can be both seen and commented on in the main activity feed. The forums are still available to individual groups if they want to record conversations for particular topics but I get the feeling that they will almost never be used because the group RSS feed is so effective.
