Job description: To deliver weekly Forest School sessions to a group of Year 3-4 pupils at a cluster of 5 Selby primary schools.  The schools are working together as part of a pilot project.

  • To plan, prepare and deliver a stimulating Forest Schools programme for the five schools tailored to their own outdoor learning areas.
  • To support teachers, support staff and parent helpers during the sessions to gain a greater understanding of the Forest Schools approach to learning.
  • To help evaluate the success of the project with a view to it continuing longer term if successful.

This post is part of an exciting project to try to bridge the attainment gap of Year 3-4 pupils through providing regular stimulating outdoor learning experiences via the Forest Schools approach.  The project aims to help build peer relationships between class members and support learning when back in the classroom.

An important part of the project is for the postholder to show staff and support staff the Forest Schools approach to learning, in order to enhance their understanding of the programme and support their learning and development.

The five primary schools are working together on the project but it will be led by the headteacher of Selby Community primary school.  The postholder will be expected to liaise successfully between the five schools to plan an exciting Forest Schools programme to be taught across them all. The postholder will lead weekly Forest School sessions at each school alongside helping to monitor pupil’s progress and helping to evaluate the success of the project.

Working hours: 0.6 term time only

The post holder will work ½ day per week in each of the 5 primary schools, plus ½ day per week planning and preparation time.  Days and hours are flexible.

Start date: as soon as possible

End date: July 2015

Based: across 5 Selby primary schools with Selby Community Primary School as the lead school.

It is hoped if successful that the project could continue longer term.

CRB  Enhanced Check required

Level 3 Forest Schools Leader qualification required

Person specification : Knowledge

  • Knowledge of the Forest Schools approach to outdoor learning
  • Basic relevant knowledge of the environment and natural world
  • Working knowledge of child/young person’s development and learning processes.
  • Knowledge of best practice in health & safety and risk management in outdoor education

Experience

  • Proven experience of leading Forest Schools sessions
  • Personal experience in relevant outdoor activities eg knot tying, den building, fire lighting, nature exploration
  • Experience of working with children

Occupational Skills

  • Able to prepare, deliver and review high quality Forest Schools sessions
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills: able to communicate effectively with children, teachers and other adults
  • Able to lead, motivate and inspire
  • Motivated and committed team worker
  • Able to work creatively and with innovation in an outdoor environment

Qualifications

  • Level 3 Forest School leader (OCN)

Other Requirements

  • Ability to attend meetings outside of normal business hours occasionally
